Anders Wijkman, internationally recognized author and thought leader in the field of sustainable development, has been appointed to the board of TCO Development. Wijkman brings over 30 years of leadership in humanitarian and sustainability issues from previous roles as member of the EU- and Swedish parliaments as well as Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations.

Wijkman is together with Professor Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker Co-President of Club of Rome and a Councillor of the World Future Council. He is member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry as well as the World Academy of Art and sciences. He also holds several board positions in organizations focusing on environmental and sustainability issues.

TCO Development is best known for TCO Certified, an international sustainability certification for IT products, which has been advancing sustainable IT for over 20 years.

Anders Wijkman comments on the board appointment: “I’m very pleased to accept an appointment to the board of TCO Development. The opportunity to address the environmental and social concerns associated with IT products is an important and challenging aspect of moving toward a more sustainable society. Particularly reducing energy and material consumption in the IT sector – there’s a lot of work to be done.

He continues: “The amount of e-waste and toxic chemicals in our environment is growing fast. The life length of many IT products is also exceptionally short. By placing more demands on the IT industry and increasing knowledge among large IT buyers, we can begin to make a difference. The public sector in particular has an interesting role in this space and can no doubt play a major part to drive change in the environmental and social aspects of our IT products from a life cycle perspective”

Board Chair Jan Gerlofstig welcomed the appointment: After more than 20 years of working internationally with the TCO Certified program, TCO Development has been able to influence the IT industry as a whole in a more sustainable direction. TCO Certified continues to drive change where sustainability challenges remain. Anders Wijkman’s commitment to circular reasoning and sustainable growth will be an excellent asset to the Board and the organization.
