A new edition of TCO Certified, generation 9 for smartphones has been released. It includes a clarification to criterion 6.6, battery information and protection.

The mandate states.
“The brand owner must provide software pre-installed that can determine and monitor the following, and display the data for the user:

  • State of Health
  • State of Charge
  • The number of full charge cycles that the battery has gone through.“

In the clarification, we have now added an extemption for products where batteries can be easily replaced by users. It reads:
“In part 2 of the mandate, ‘The State of Health’ and ‘The number of full charge cycles that the battery has gone through’ are not applicable if the battery is replaceable by the user without tools.”

We recommend that professionals in product design and compliance take note of this update. If you have questions, please contact Stefan Carlberg.
