– TCO Certified Accepted Substance List
Safer alternatives to hazardous substances listed here
Hazardous substances in IT products are a risk to human health and the environment. Criteria in TCO Certified aim to reduce or eliminate the use of these substances, drive transparency and develop pathways to safer alternatives.
Simply banning substances isn’t enough. We need better information about the substances that are being used to replace them. With TCO Certified, a chemical is considered a high risk until it is proven to be otherwise. GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals is used to identify a pathway to safer alternatives. Only plasticizers, flame retardants and process chemicals that achieve a benchmark score of 2, 3 or 4 by a Licensed GreenScreen Profiler are added to TCO Certified Accepted Substance List and may be used in the products and manufacture of certified products.
TCO Certified Accepted Substance List
Substances listed by CASRN or Trade name are approved for use in the products and manufacture of certified products. The list is dynamic and the substances may be reassessed in light of new scientific findings. You can filter the list by clicking on the purple header bar, or by using the search field to the right.
Assessments are valid for up to five years. To remain listed, a substance must be re-assessed before the expiry date (shown under ‘Approaching expiration date’), otherwise the substance will be moved to the potential candidate list and can no longer be used for certified products. If you want a substance to be assessed or re-assessed, please contact us for cost-sharing alternatives.

- Trade name specific benchmark in accordance to polymeric criteria in GreenScreen v1.4. Other trade names for the same CAS# number must provide a separate GS assessment since any relevant production impurity can impact the final benchmark.
- Expired assessment report. A valid assessment report confirming a benchmark score of 2, 3 or 4 must be received before the sunset date for this substance to remain accepted.
- Trade name-specific cleaning product (CP) independently assessed to GreenScreen Certified™ Cleaners & Degreasers. Gold and Platinum levels require each chemical in the product to be assessed with GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals and be scored Benchmark 2 or higher. To remain listed, the certification must be updated every third year.
Clarifications
All substances on this list have been assessed and given a benchmark score by Licensed GreenScreen Profilers. To access assessments that are not freely available, please contact the profiler who conducted it.
Potential candidates for TCO Certified Accepted Substance List
This list presents substances that have been previously reviewed by toxicologists. Their assessments indicate that the substances may be classed as safer alternatives. However, to be added to TCO Certified Accepted Substance List, an updated assessment must be carried out by a Licensed GreenScreen Profiler. The substance must receive a benchmark score of 2, 3, or 4 and the assessment report must be submitted to TCO Development. If a substance has been assessed in accordance with a chemical hazard assessment framework other than GreenScreen, it must be converted to GreenScreen.
If you are interested in seeing a substance added to TCO Certified Accepted Substance List or the potential candidate list, contact TCO Development or the profiler organization.

GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals Benchmarks
GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals is the tool used to identify a pathway to safer alternatives to be used in certified products. GreenScreen offers an objective, scientific way of assessing these potential effects, and finding safer alternatives to the most hazardous substances.
All substances achieving a GreenScreen benchmark are assessed by licensed profilers accredited by Clean Production Action to carry out Green Screen Assessments. In TCO Certified, substances achieving a GreenScreen benchmark 2 or better are accepted for compliance with the criteria for non-halogenated substances.
